Hypersexuality among collegiate populations: Exploring self-conscious emotions

January 27, 2016, 1:00 pm eastern

Presented by Amanda Giordano Ph.D, LPC, NCC

Description:

Although not included in the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, researchers and clinicians agree that many individuals experience problematic, compulsive sexual behaviors. These behaviors have been labeled in various ways, yet are characterized by the loss of control over sexual acts and continued engagement despite negative consequences.

This webinar explores out-of-control sexual behaviors among college student populations. Specifically, the presenter will describe prevalence rates of hypersexuality, aspects of the college setting that may contribute to compulsive sexual behaviors, and salient screening tools. In addition, the presenter will provide recent findings regarding affective predictors of hypersexuality among college students as well as gender differences.

This information can inform clinical work with collegiate populations and may be pertinent to general clinicians in the addictions field who address addictive behaviors such as hypersexuality.

Gender-Based Sexual Violence on College Campuses, What Counselors Should Know

February 9, 2016, 1:00 pm eastern

Presented by Bridgette Schossow, LPC, CAC II, Doctoral Candidate

Description:

Gendered based violence, such as sexual violence and intimate partner violence, occurs at an alarming rate on college campuses. While many awareness efforts as well as law changes have been made, there continue to be barriers in the reporting process and response to gender violence.

Further, the stigmas associated with intimate partner violence exist on the college campus; however, there are relationship dynamics, safety issues, and fears specific to a college campus. An increased understanding of the victim experience on college campuses will aid counselors in empathizing and assisting clients in the therapeutic process.

This session will aid in helping counselors understand gender based violence on the college campus, the barriers experienced by victims, as well as the impact of Title IX, the Clery Act, and university regulations.
